IT’S CHIC TO EAT GREEK

Dollakis in the Park in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland

DOLLAKIS RESTAURANT

Dollakis in the Park, sounds like a music festival right….wrong!  It is in fact one of the finest Greek street food experiences you will ever have this side of the Mediterranean sea.  Opening its doors in Enniskillen back in 2008, Dollakis is owned (and run) by husband and wife team Georgios and Sarah Maravelakis.  Not content with Dollakis Restaurant having a permanent dwelling place in Enniskillen, Georgios and Sarah set up a ‘pop-up’ restaurant in Castle Archdale Country Park which is situated on the glorious shores of Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh.  Not just any old pop-up mind, it’s a pop-up with difference; a rather large difference in the shape of a Norwegian Tippee.  The perfect setting for serving Greek street food.

A REALLY POSH TENT

Towering skywards, the Dollakis ‘tippee-pop-up-restaurant’ has plenty of seating in the form of picnic benches.  In the centre, a fantastic heater for the coldest of days, not that Fermanagh get’s many of those, everyone knows even the rain is warm in Fermanagh.  With imitation vine leaves adorning the inside, complete with bunches of grapes I may add, the Dollakis in the Park tippee has a simple cosy setup, and it works really well.

SENSORY OVERLOAD

As you approach the open serving hatch of the Dollakis street food van, the wonderful aromas of Greek food hits you….hard!  Nostrils dancing, tongue tingling and our senses overloaded, we couldn’t wait to place our order.  Peering in through the hatch, it’s very difficult not to spot the enormous tower of meat rotating in the background, it looks and smells delicious.

After a brief moment looking over the menu, we order as follows;
Daddy – spit roast gyros kebab on flat bread
Mummy – falafel and halloumi
Lily-Belle – 6oz greek burger with chips
Matilda – picked off everyone’s plate
…and a portion of rustic chips with salt, you can also have them with lemon and garlic.  Both flavours are highly recommended.

The falafel is normally our ‘want more’ dish, so, knowing there would be a squabble, Mummy was on the ball and ordered two.  Plenty of food to go around.

AS AUTHENTIC GREEK AS IT COMES

It’s almost impossible to describe the taste of food as it’s basically subjective to the person eating the food.  But, what can we say about Dollakis in the Park and the food they serve, other than, it’s faultless.  The flavours are so intense.  If you close your eyes you can almost imagine yourself sitting in a Greek restaurant somewhere in the med, a bouzouki playing in the background, and locals conversing over lunch.  If I could use just one word to describe the Dollakis experience, it would have to be AUTHENTIC.

Dollakis will be providing food at the upcoming BBC Northern Ireland Proms in the Park which is taking place in Castle Coole, Fermanagh on 9th September 2017, they will also be in attendance at the ABV Beer Festival in Belfast on the 1st and 2nd of September 2017, an event not to be missed.

LILY-BELLE (age 8) SAYS
I love the children’s menu that is available, normally I get the crispy chicken, but today I decided to try the burger which tasted a bit minty to me.  I love the chips with lemon and garlic and I really love the falafels, the dip is a bit too spicy for me and Matilda.  We especially like that there’s a play park right next door and a shop where we can get an ice cream.

MATILDA (age 3) SAYS
Daddy me like but spicy, need coke (as she puffs and pants sticking her tongue out).
