🚙 Hiring a car, and driving in Lapland 🚙

We have spent time in Lapland with and without a car. Our first trip in 2016 was very short, with only 2 days to explore. On this occasion we loved our "car free" stay in Santa Claus Holiday Village. On our second trip in March 2019, we decided to stay in two different resorts and hiring a car was essential. We loved both holidays so you can do Lapland with or without a car. Although we have never used public transport in Lapland, people have and with no problems.

❄️ Would we recommend hiring a car in Lapland?
Yes, especially if you are staying for longer than a few days or if you are flying to Rovaniemi and travelling to a different resort. A car just gives you that little bit more freedom to explore.

❄️ How much will car hire cost in Lapland?
You can hire a car for one week from as little as £250 (people carriers can be very expensive!). We always book our car hire @enjoytraveluk and the earlier you book the better, is definitely true with booking car hire for any holiday. Enjoy Travel allows free cancellation and pay on arrival so there is nothing stopping you from booking straight away by just paying a low deposit.

❄️ Is it easy to drive in Lapland?
We get asked this question a lot! Going by the photo you might think that the answer is No, but the answer is Yes. The picture is from a momentary lack of driver concentration while looking at the local wildlife. With some assistance from locals we were on our way again in no time. In general, we (I should say Andrew 🙈) found driving to be relatively easy. I drove for the first time last year, so if I can, anyone can 😂 Roads are well cleared when snow falls, and the roads are not busy. Obviously you should always take care, as although roads are well treated, you are still driving in a foreign country and in very different conditions. The main time to take extra care is when there has been rain and then freezes.

🇮🇪 I am in Ireland, can I book?
Yes, you just need a Virtual postcode (check out our Sun Holidays stories).

📆 Can you book during school holidays?
Yes; Easter, October, July (middle of July) and the last week of August.

💰 How much will they really cost?
Peak times (July/August) a week will cost around £400 for a family of 4. Off Peak, you will pay around £240.

🎉 Will we save money compared to booking direct with Eurocamp?
Not always, so please check before booking, but you normally will for Peak Season. We saved £900 last year and £2200 one year!!!!

✈️ Are flights included?
No, only your accommodation, and it is very important to check on your flights before you book.

⛱️ What is the accommodation like?
The accommodation is a Mobile Home, we have always loved our stays. If you have found your Park, look on Eurocamps website for the accommodation, you will normally be staying in the most basic type and no upgrades are allowed.

Our Top Tips....

🌞 Do your research and have different Parks and dates that you are happy with. We normally have 5 parks and 5 dates that we can work with.

🌞 Check flights before booking opens, you don't want to book a cheap deal, to then find out that flights are extortionate!

🌞 Get up early or stay up late, it really is worth it to find the best deals! Booking will open the early hours of Tuesday 9th January.

How long to stay for?

⏳ The length of your trip is very dependent on personal preference and circumstances. Unfortunately, not everyone has the option to take a full week off, or let their children skip a few days of school. My advice, just go for as long as you can! We have done both short and long trips to Lapland. On our first visit in 2016 we only had 2 days in Rovaniemi and our longest trip has been for 12 days.

Can you see and do everything in 2 days? Definitely, we didn't feel that we missed out on anything. Our girls were just 2 and 7 on our first trip. We stayed at Santa Claus Holiday Village for just one night, so it really was a flying visit.

✈️ Flights will probably dictate the time that you spend in Lapland. I have found that flight times are generally pretty good, early going out, and late coming home (scroll down if you have missed our post about flights).

Rovaniemi is a great resort to stay in if you are there for a few days. The Village and town are literally 5 minutes from the Airport. The Airport itself is tiny, no long queues for check in and security. All these factors help you maximise your time to enjoy Lapland.

If you are able to stay for one week, do it! You can explore other Resorts (scroll down for Resort post) or do a split stay like we have done in the past.

I suppose the other factor when considering how long to stay for is cost and daily budget. Your daily budget can vary greatly depending on your activities and eating arrangements. Whether you stay for a few days or a week, activities will be roughly the same price (activities post coming soon). Enjoying the snow is free 😂 One of our favourite activities was going up and down the lane of our cabin on the kick sleds. If you are staying for longer than a few days, you get to relax and enjoy the simplicity of Lapland. Our best days in Lapland have been chilling at our Cabin by the lake, playing in the snow, roasting marshmallows in our BBQ hut and gazing at the Northern Lights from out hot tub ❤️ Cont'd in comments

Which resort to stay at?

There are quite a few resorts in Finnish Lapland, and to be honest we really can't recommend which one is best to stay at. We haven't stayed in all of them and also everyone's opinion is different. You will find all of the activities are available in each resort, but the Santa experience will vary from place to place (we will chat about this in another post) . Our advice is to do your research and go with your gut instinct, and hopefully this post will help you along the way.

❄️ Rovaniemi
We have stayed here twice and have loved every second of it. Some people say that it is too commercialised, but we really didn't feel that it was, and we are the kind of people who love to travel to hidden gems where we don't even meet another tourist 😉

🎅 Rovaniemi is home to Santa Claus Holiday Village which is the official home of Santa in Finnish Lapland. Easyjet and Ryanair fly direct to Rovaniemi, and there are no long resort transfers involved.

This might shock you, but Rovaniemi is just a normal town and Santa Claus Village lies on the outskirts. When we first visited in December 2016 we stayed in the Village itself. I remember it feeling so magical and it felt like we were at the North Pole. We were picked up at the airport and in the short 5 minute transfer we didn't see anything that gave the sense of a busy town. The village was great to stay at as all the activities were on our doorstep, perfect for a short stay as no time is wasted travelling to activities. In 2019 we were back in Rovaniemi and had a 2 night stay at the village and then an equally magical 4 night stay in a log cabin with a hot tub by a frozen lake. Both very different experiences but equally as wonderful. During our most recent visit, we spent some time at Apukka Resort Rovaniemi and it again is another great option if you want all of your activities on your doorstep. In recent years we have spent some time in the City. I know a lot of people stay in apartments there, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

We have been travelling to Lapland since 2016, and we have never paid crazy Travel Agent pricing!

During this time of year, we always share all of our Lapland travel tips.

Part 1 - ✈️ What airlines fly to Lapland?

🎅 Easyjet flies straight to Santa Claus's Official airport in Rovaniemi. Flights are normally released in March and the route runs from November to December, apart from Gatwick which runs until March.
Gatwick - Wednesday & Sunday (March)
London Luton - Tuesday & Saturday
Bristol - Monday & Friday
Edinburgh - Wednesday & Sunday
Manchester - Tuesday & Saturday

EasyJet also now flies to Kittila, which is perfect if you are staying in Levi Ski Resort.
Gatwick - Tuesday & Saturday
Manchester - Thursday & Sunday

🎅 Ryanair flies direct to Rovaniemi. Flights have already been released for Dublin. All Ryanair flights are from November to March.
Dublin - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday
Liverpool - Monday & Saturday
Stansted - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday

💷 How much will they cost?
Last year on release day people were able to book flights for between £50 and £100pp for December dates, but they had nimble fingers. Prices can increase so much within minutes, so make sure you set your budget and have thought about your dates. Obviously December is going to be at peak prices, so consider a date in the New Year as well. We will have a post about when to travel to Lapland coming soon. It is much cheaper to travel after December, and for us, it is a lovely time to visit.

I have seen flights for £50pp in January and for £250pp for flying Christmas/NYE!
